Norman Hannewald ’51

Norman Hannewald ’51, professor emeritus of music, died Aug. 16, 2016.

Professor Hannewald received his master’s degree in music education from Indiana University and that same year joined the faculty of the Valparaiso University music department. He served as director of bands at Valpo until the late 1970s, taking a leave of absence to obtain his Ed.D. from Indiana University in 1974. Professor Hannewald remained at Valpo until his retirement in 1983 as head of the music education program.

Among Professor Hannewald’s most appreciated services was his work as coordinator of student teaching, where he acted as a liaison with principals and school teachers, enhancing the effectiveness of the program. He also served for a time as dean of men at the University.

Professor Hannewald was a member of the Music Educators National Conference and was active in directing various music organizations, including the Gary Music Theatre, the Gary Symphony Orchestra, and the Immanuel Lutheran Church Choir.
