College of Business Expanding to Add Aviation Program
Pending final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, Valpo’s College of Business will launch an aviation program beginning fall 2017.
The program will provide a gateway opportunity for students interested in aviation and may be used as the initial step for students interested in a career in commercial piloting. Students will earn an associate of science in aviation and obtain some of the necessary certifications for piloting.
“Every piece of data we can find tells us there will be significant shortages of qualified folks in the aviation industry,” says Tom Cedel, distinguished visiting professor and retired United States Air Force pilot. “This program will be an important way for Valparaiso University to serve our community, region, and nation within the context of our mission of preparing students to lead and serve.”
The looming shortage of pilots has already impacted the industry through canceled flights nationwide, and 20,000 cockpit seats are expected to open over the next six years due to FAA-mandated retirement requirements. In addition to flight crew positions, students can prepare for aviation management, airport management, and other areas of the aviation industry.
Valpo is uniquely positioned to prepare students in aviation, thanks to the close proximity of an airport and a partnership with a flight school that has the highest rating the FAA awards. The University also has an advisory council of flight crews from all major air carriers.
