Valpo Remembers

Theodore “Ted” M. Ludwig

Fall 2021

Theodore “Ted” M. Ludwig, age 83, professor emeritus of theology, passed away Aug. 11, 2020.

Professor Ludwig taught in Valpo’s theology department from 1968 until his retirement in 2003, specializing in Old Testament studies and world religions. He was valued for his good humor, inclusive spirit, intelligence, helping hands and kind heart.

In 1998 he became the first occupant of the Surjit S. Patheja Chair in World Religions and Ethics. He authored or co-authored many articles and books, including the textbook “The Sacred Paths — Understanding the Religions of the World,” currently in its fourth edition.

Professor Ludwig and his wife engaged with the Valparaiso Builders Association (VBA), which was instrumental in creating affordable housing for the first Black families to move into the then all-white Valpo from housing projects in Chicago. Since 1986, the VBA has been known as Project Neighbors, and the organization has expanded into affordable daycare, health care, education, human relations, and economic development for those in need.
