Philip Gehring ’84H
Philip Gehring ’84H, age 94, professor emeritus of music and former University organist at Valparaiso University, passed away Oct. 6, 2020.
Professor Gehring joined the Valparaiso University faculty in 1958 and taught organ, improvisation, and other subjects and served as University organist. In 1985, Professor Gehring was named the first Frederick A. and Maize N. Reddel Professor of Music at Valparaiso University. He was also named an honorary alumnus and received the Christus Rex Award for significant contributions to Lutheran liturgical scholarship and renewal.
After his retirement from Valparaiso University in 1989, he remained active as a composer and performer. In 2019, Professor Gehring and William Eifrig ’55 were honored in an event with performances celebrating the lasting legacy of the two professors emeriti.
